Dolson Concert Review in UA’s Buchtelite

Buchtelite columnist Steve Lidrbauch reviews Dolson’s Stage Door Concert at EJ Thomas Hall.
The following is quoted from Lidrbauch’s column via www.buchtelite.com

The Return of Steve’s Ego

Steve Lidrbauch

By now, you’re probably thinking to yourself that you really hoped you’d never have to read another one of my columns ever again.

Before I go on any further, I would like to take a moment to tell you, the reader that you are not obligated to continue reading. Last time I checked a map, this is America.

For those who are happy, I have triumphantly returned and wish to continue reading: I’m back, baby!

And I have so much to say!

Let’s start with last Saturday. If you missed the Stage Door concert at E.J. Thomas, you lose.

It was really something we’ll dub “neat.”

I’ve never been to a concert at E.J. before, but that’s mostly because the atmosphere seemed too fancy for me.

No, I’m not saying I prefer back alley bars and biker brawls, but seat checkers wearing suits and balcony views seem a little unnatural for a rock show. This was totally different!

The entrance was located through the stage door, which I’m guessing is why they called it a “stage door concert.”

On the stage were places to sit, a bar in the far back and a stage for the the bands.

Yeah, a stage on top of a stage. It confused me for a second, too.

It pretty much looked like any other average venue. Well, except for the curtain and the empty stadium seats behind the stage.

And the topic, Dolson was great! I’ve never seen them play before, but they rocked!

They seem to be pretty popular in Akron, and I felt like most of the fans were there for them.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not trying to take anything away from Lovedrug.

They put on a great show, but Dolson’s a local band and front man Andy Dolson is an Akron alumni.

Don’t get too excited for me, but I actually got to hang out with him for a little bit backstage.

Although, technically since the stage on the stage was facing the back of the stage, I guess you’d say I hung out with him in front of the stage?

A Paradox? Or an Abbot and Costello routine?

Either way, I stole a chip when he wasn’t looking. Don’t tell anyone.

What is Noise Trade you ask?

The following is a quote from the Noise Trade About page:

Artists want to know, connect with, and be supported by music fans. Music fans want high-quality, free (or variably priced) music and to be rewarded, not punished, for sharing the music they love with their friends. We believe that if artists and fans work together, everyone can get what they want.

“A great record is its own best marketing tool,” says Derek Webb, singer/songwriter and Co-Founder of NoiseTrade. “All the marketing dollars in the world can’t accomplish what one great record can, especially if it’s set free to roam around and connect with the right people.” In 2006 Webb gave away his ‘Mockingbird’ record for free online, asking in return for a little information (name, email address, and postal code), and as part of the process, for fans to invite their friends to download as well.

In three month’s time Webb gave away over 80,000 full downloads of his record and collected valuable information for as many new fans. In addition, Derek has since seen many sold out shows and increased merchandise and record sales, including a curious spike in sales of the very record that was given for free.

It was the massive success of this experiment that inspired Webb, with the help of a few trusted friends, to start NoiseTrade. Now any artist can freely distribute their music online, via NoiseTrade’s remarkable and embeddable widget, offering fans the choice to tell 5 friends or to pay any amount in exchange for an immediate download.

“Who needs peer-to-peer when you can have artist-to-fan?” Derek concludes, “If artists and fans realized how they could help each other and started making direct connections, without a middleman, the whole industry would change overnight. It would start a revolution.”

DOLSON featured in IOTM Blog

This months post from Indie On The Move’s blog featured a story from Dolson. The title of the entry COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE! featured stories from Indie bands across the country about the tough lessons learned on the road.

The following is an excerpt from the blog.

“Last year we played New York City,” begins Andy Dolson of the northeastern Ohio-based, Dolson. “I fell asleep on a subway train, ended up in Coney Island and lost my guitar player’s pedal board on the subway, only to get it returned by the Coney Island police two days later. I got a parking ticket in Manhattan, and the next week earned myself a $140 ticket in North Carolina for watching It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia while driving. To top it all off, three weeks later I got a letter in the mail from NYCDOT. It was a snapshot of my car in the intersection with a red light, another $50 ticket.” As if that were not enough in the touring world of Dolson, “This year we got ‘pulled’ over by a cop directing traffic for not wearing a seatbelt and proceeded to hit him with our trailer.”
