October 11: Chicago

October 9: Yearbook Yourself

October 9: Yearbook Yourself

So, by now, I’m guessing that a lot of you have already heard of/been to YearbookYourself.com. It’s another one of those sites where you upload a picture of yourself or another person and generally make a mockery said person or yourself…..it gets addicting. I mean, I logged on nearly 45 min ago and there went my morning. I had a few chuckles here and there, but the scary thing was that in one of the pictures, I totally look like my grandpa, and in another picture….well, here, see for yourself.

In this one I look like a picture of my grandpa from the 60’s hangin on the wall in my grandparent’s basement.

1964

Next is just the creepy guy from the back of your class who gives you a senior picture with a long note on it about how much he appreciates your friendship even though you still can’t remember his name and swear that you’ve never met him.

1970

The next few look all too real, as if I were actually there. Here I am gettin a little mullet action in 88.

1988

Growin it long in 90.

1990

Then decided to cut my hair in 92.

1992

Take a little more off the top in 94. Throw a little mousse in there.

1994

The scary part is that I totally had the haircut from this next one. “The Mushroom Cut” as we chose to refer to it.

1996

And I just can’t get over this last one for so many reasons…

1998

So, if you’re at work today, or school, or you’re just bored sitting at home I recommend at YearbookYourself.com for at least an hour of fun. Start yearbooking your friends, that would be hilarious. Send me your best yearbooked self or yearbooked friend, and if it makes me laugh, I’ll post it.

Send pictures to andy@dolsonmusic.com.

Alright, I gotta get some things together for tonight, and then it’s off to Chicago. Hope to see you there.

October 8: Thinking

October 8: Thinking

I’m sick of this election. Argue all you want and try and convince me why each candidate is the redemption or destruction of this nation, but i just don’t see it. Call me ignorant, but I’m just not convinced that the president is the only factor in the success or failure of our country during the tenure of his/her administration. Sure George W. wasn’t the best President this country has seen. Some for sure would argue the worst, but you can’t honestly believe that he is single handedly responsible for every problem that our country is facing today. It’s so much more complicated than that.

Now, I’m not endorsing our current president by writing this. I just wish that people would recognize that no single candidate is going to have such a significant influence that our country could either flourish or whither on his/her account.

Just recognize that in the grand scheme of things. I mean, beyond the past 8 years, beyond the next 4, beyond our 200+ year old country, that this election is barely a blink in the eye of our universe. If you want to see change, be an instrument for change rather than a mouthpiece for someone else. I’m tired of the piety of politics. We need to start practicing what we preach. The politicians that we vote for sure don’t, so why do we expect the next one to be any different?……more importantly, we don’t practice what we preach, so why would we trust anyone else to? I know sure as heck that I don’t.

So get out and vote this election….sure, it’s important….i’m sure that you have opinions and they are valid and strong, but better yet, get out and be the change that you want to see. Don’t rely on our next president to fix problems you see….that’s easy…and i promise you that you won’t be satisfied……alright, that’s all i have to say. That’s the easy part. . .

October 6: Home

October 6: Home

Just a few more days till Chicago. I gotta tell you, I can’t wait for the pizza. It’s by far the best thing Chicago has to offer. I’m heading there on Thursday with my buddy Pete Nischt to play at DePaul University. We were out there in April, and it was freezing! but we got to eat Giordano’s, which I love, and we slept in Pete’s car for one night…..so overall, it was a good trip. Hopefully it’ll be a little bit warmer this time, and mabye we’ll try Lou Malnati’s for a change.

Tonight, my friend Ben finished screening the posters for the show. Check it out.

Pretty cool huh? Each one is hand printed on 11×17 card stock. The illustration is by Ben’s wife Ashley who if I’m lucky, will be working on the artwork for the new album.

(I’ll throw this little interjection here. The album should be out in January if all goes smoothly from here on out. As far as I know, it will be mixed this month, but if you know much about the music business, it’s kinda like the construction business. Things take a whole lot longer and end up costing a whole lot more than expected, but in the end it’s worth it…..unless your roof starts leaking…i guess…)

Anyways, if you like what you see, then check out Gitgan.com or just email ben@gitgan.com. They do custom design and screen printing as well as web design, and whole lot more. Ben’s a good friend of mine, and has been for quite some time, and he will be featured on the album playing bass for “Could Be You”. He and his wife are pretty darn talented if you ask me.

On a completely unrelated note, I got to take pictures today for my friends Aaron and Rachel and their family. Aaron’s the guy on the right, and you’ll get to hear him playing drums on the new album for the song “whisper”.

Aaron and his wife Rachel have two of the most adorable girls ever.

We had some trouble getting Aaliyah to smile, but after some play time she was loving it.

Here’s one of Aaliyah pretending to take pictures of me.

So now you got to meet Aaron, and like I said he’s on the album…oh yeah, and Ben is too, but I think I already told you that. This post has alot more to do with dolson music than I initially thought.

Well, I’ll be hanging posters tomorrow, and getting some things ready for Chicago. I hope you follow along, cause I’ll be posting from the Windy City. Oh, and check back tomorrow for some behind the scenes footage of a dolson rehearsal.

Oct 5: Rehearsal

Oct 5: Rehearsal

So tonight Jon, Stephanie, and I rehearsed for our show at Musica on October 18, with Lovedrug. Things are really coming together, and I just have to give mad props to my man, Jon Penn. We’ve been experimenting with looping and whatnot.

Without Jon, none of what we’re doing would work. It’s great though. Jon has everything running through his laptop, and with the use of midi triggers, and an open source program SooperLooper, we are able to recreate one of the most complex songs on the new record with only 3 people playing.

I’m sure you’ve seen other people do things similar before with guitar loopstations, or if you’ve ever seen Dosh, you might have an idea of what we’re getting ourselves into. The thing is, Jon and I dreamed this whole thing up like 5 or 6 months ago, and sorta by accident, it has all come to fruition.

I wish I could describe it better to you, but it’s just one of those things you’ll have to experience for yourself. There’s so much energy, it’s compelling.

On top of all that, Jon is selling me his old 88 key USB controller, so I have a new toy to play with, and keep up even later than usual…..I can’t tell you how excited I am for the Lovedrug show. Jon, Stephanie, and I have really found a niche with one another. For those of you who have seen a Dolson show before, throw all of your expectations to the wind, because this is nothing like anything we have ever done before. This is truly a “show”, not something you can just listen to, but something you have to experience. Oh, and we’ve definitely got a few surprises up our sleeve, so don’t miss it.
